72,000 students at the University have some type of financial aid including scholarships, loans, grants or tuition waivers. Handling these tens of thousands of applications used to be an enormous effort for the University staff as well as a confusing and complicated process for the students.
The Financial Aid Award Notice (FAAN) is the letter students receive annually from the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) notifying them of their financial aid packages for the upcoming academic year. Students use this document to accept, decline and reduce financial aid awards and send their responses back to OSFA for processing and data entry into PeopleSoft. The Web-based FAAN puts this functionality on-line so that students are able to authenticate through X.500, see the aid they have been offered, reply to those offers, and have their responses loaded directly into PeopleSoft.
The financial aid process for returning students used to take the entire summer, beginning with mailing the FAAN when spring grades were posted (Twin Cities only). Web-enabling the FAAN allows the other pieces of the financial aid process to happen on time, thus achieving the ultimate goal of disbursing aid prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
